A 2025 Hollywood Fringe Scholarship Winner, Natural Born Citizen is a heartfelt and humorous solo show exploring identity, belonging, and the power of self-acceptance.

Set in post-9/11 America, it follows a Muslim, first-generation American navigating freshman year at a new high school, where the constant question, “Where are you from?” leads to small lies to fit in. But after an impulsive run for Class Vice President against the popular girl and the lovable jock, they begin to embrace their identity instead of hiding it.

As school life changes, so does home. Family secrets unravel, leading to an Election Day that forces a reckoning with who they truly are.

Through storytelling, character monologues, and one ironically memorable campaign slogan, Natural Born Citizen unpacks the immigrant experience, cultural expectations, and the layered answer to “Where are you from?”

Creator and performer Yousaf Sajid appears at the Upright Citizens Brigade, Groundlings G2 Theater, Pack Theater, The Moth MainStage, and storytelling shows across L.A., where his work reflects life as a first-generation, brown, single artist.
